Today is a day for the history books.
I got to San Francisco’s City Hall just after 7 a.m. this morning knowing that the Defense of Marriage Act had already been ruled unconstitutional by the Supreme Court just minutes before when I had been on BART. It was packed by the time I got there and only grew more crowded as the tense crowd held its collective breath.
Then the Perry decision came out. And the crowd cheered.
“As goes San Francisco, so goes California. And as goes California, so goes the Nation!” That’s how the President of the Board of Supervisors David Chiu greeted the many folks crammed into City Hall this morning. He spoke after Mayor Ed Lee, former Mayor and Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom, and City Attorney Dennis Herrera, among others.
I wanted to hang out in the Castro for what I’m sure was a raucous party this evening, but it was family dinner night.
What a day!
