The Gordita King.

That, my friends, is the Gordita King.

Otherwise known as Geoff, Kayla’s fiance and soon-to-be husband come June 18th.

His dream is to make gorditas and have a gordita restaurant. What is a gordita? A softly grilled masa exterior with a cheesy gooey varied filling. Similar to a papusa, but not fried. Geoff was the nicest guy ever and made me vegetarian gorditas because I mentioned I’d like to try them.

Kayla said it was just because he loves any excuse to make gorditas.

Either way, he shaped those babies by hand, and filled them with either a bean and cheese mixture or a cheese and green pepper filling. He even bought soy chorizo for me (since I don’t eat meat) to fry up with the bean and cheese. Wow. Stand-up guy right there.

It was delicious and he wielded that tiny spatula like a master.

As Kayla got ready to take me to the airport, Geoff handed me a little plastic box. He made me three gorditas to take home on the airplane! He knew I wasn’t going to have any food to eat at home tonight.

And that is precisely why Kayla is marrying him. Geoff is one of the best guys in the world.

Brunching at Huckleberry.

Kayla has been talking up this brunch place called Huckleberry in Santa Monica every time I see her.

So finally, this morning after we woke up all slightly hungover from the bachelorette party last night, we decided to go try this place out and see whether it lives up to Kayla’s effusive lauding. It did. Huckleberry is awesome. The tiny place was PACKED. Yet they moved people along really quickly and efficiently. Customer service was great for any food establishment, much less one that was doing that volume of people turnover.

The pastry display was freaking unbelievable. I wanted to roll around in that case and eat every single thing. Instead, Kayla got us an assortment to try.

A maple bacon biscuit, a blueberry cornmeal cake, a croissant, and a apricot tart. All amazing. And you know how I know the bacon biscuit was amazing (that’s a shot of it above by the way), because I ate a bite.

I don’t eat meat, but Kayla kept talking about how yummy it was so I just ate a bite. The bacon taste was so intense and it was delicious. Dense and rich and really, really good.

We loved our brunch dishes. Eggs everywhere, I got the roasted asparagus hash with sunny side eggs on top.

Light and fresh. I enjoyed it.

Ok, second post of the day. On to my third! I am just posting up a storm.

Jenn
