Rock of Ages promised it would melt my face off. It did more than that. It scrambled my brains so thoroughly I feel like they are leaking out through my broken eardrums. It was a loud, loud rocktastic show over there at the Curran.
Before M and I showed up for the 8 o’clock rockfest, we dined at Le Colonial. It’s a gorgeous secluded restaurant situated in the middle of an alley and actually very busy inside. Bear with me while I take a little trip down memory lane – M and I have been talking about trying out the food at Le Colonial for a while. Over a year to be exact. We went there for drinks after Indonesian food with his parents on March 14, 2010 and vowed we would return for dinner. Well, we finally did.
And you know what? I would only go there for drinks and dessert. Not only do their entree portions seem small, the food just was not very good. I ordered spring rolls and a papaya salad and both were slightly stale and simply bland. The rice paper on the rolls were hard and yucky. Not very tasty at all. M’s $32! entree of “wok-seared filet mignon cubes with sweet garlic-soy sauce over watercress, baby greens, toy box tomatoes, and crispy russet potatoes” reads like a scrumptiously meaty delight, but in reality was a few beef pieces on two lettuce leaves with a schmear of sauce. So sad.
The drinks and dessert were much better. M and I ordered a Cucumber Gimlet and The Old Cuban. I actually got a Cucumber Gimlet the last time I was there and it was just as refreshing and delicious (I stole a sip of M’s to taste test.)
I got really excited for dessert when I read “Green Tea Creme Brulee with Macerated Strawberries.” Uhm, hell yes! In my face, right now! It was pretty fantastic. M’s fried bananas were nothing to scoff at either. They were fried with a really light tempura batter and weren’t greasy in the least. I sort of had to eat my words as I sampled his dessert because originally, I totally gave him shit for ordering fried bananas. I always expect that type of dessert to be awful, but I was wrong.
On to the show. I don’t know what I was expecting – well, actually I lie, I was expecting a rock version of the TV show “Glee.” That was not what I got. I thought the energy was great, the music was fun and nostalgic, and the singers were incredibly talented. Especially the actress that played Sherrie – Elicia MacKenzie – she had an amazingly full and layered voice. What I didn’t like however, was the fact that the acoustics were kind of muddy and very, very loud. So loud that it was hard to hear what was being sung. And another con for me was that the songs they were covering are actually a little before my time, so I’m sure I didn’t quite get to reminiscence as much as everyone else around me was doing.
Overall, a great show.
Le Colonial? You will only be serving me booze and sweets.
Tomorrow, I paintball. Yes, you heard me. Paintball. Details and bruises soon.
xoxo,
Jenn
